A Dog’s Urge To Mark

Pee glorious peeDogs are like people in some ways. Some have urges to do things that others don’t. For example, marking. Marking’s when a dog, usually a male, has to lift his leg just about everywhere to leave some of his urine for whatever reason he has. To let other animals know he’s been there, to flavor the environment, to add extra scent to someone else’s scent, create a boundary over territory, or something else. We don’t know exactly what drives each dog to do so, but there are some dogs that have to mark.

And marking is quite fine if done outside on natural objects such as trees, bushes, fire hydrants and the likes. Though not cool on laundry drying in the sun. And of course we don’t want marking indoors. That’s quite annoying and the longer you let your dog practice marking, the better he gets at it and the more he thinks it’s OK. If you don’t train a dog not to mark, then it’s not fair to tell him he’s done wrong. Especially after weeks, months, or even years of practicing.

Training a dog not to mark in the house is doable, but you need to be consistent with the training. We do board-and-trains at Love Wags A Tail Dog Training specifically for marking. It can be a road, but we start the markers out right, and then teach the owners how to continue with the training to keep the dog on the right track. Sometimes it comes down to who can be more stubborn with the training plan, the dog or the owner? If owners hang in there and stick to it, they will win. There is light at the end of the tunnel to change the ways of dogs who mark. We can help. Contact us.
