A Light Bulb Pet Memorial

Anyone who has loved a pet and enjoyed their company, knows how quickly they become a member of the family. Pets can become closer to us than some human members of our families because not only are our pets non judgmental, but our dogs, other fur kids and pets live with us through our day-to-day struggles and celebrations.

Our beloved pet dogs are here for use when we are happy, sad, and anything in between. When the time comes that a pet must depart our company, though, our hearts break. Especially when we have to make the decision to help them by relieving their pain and with the assistance of a kind veterinarian, stand by and comfort our pet as euthanasia takes place.

Afterwards, there is the empty space, and we need to find ways to comfort ourselves. That hole in our hearts needs to be dealt with. As I heal from the loss of a pet, I find solace in setting up an object that reminds me of her.

This is one example of many I use on the long road to coping with the loss of a fur kid as I live out the rest of my life without her. Recently, I lost my beloved Border Collie, Mimi. And as I walked around the yard, suddenly, one of my string lights went out. So when I replaced it, I put in a color that wasn’t anywhere on that string of lights to remind me that Mimi was still with me. The blue light bulb is a bit of comfort to me as I take my daily walks around the yard doing work and walking for exercise. As I pass by, I send Mimi love.

If you want to get more creative, writing your pet’s name on a light bulb with permanent marker could extend the personalization. Or if you’re more artistic. decorate the bulb, using the marker, with symbols or pictures that remind you of your pet. I’ve checked on-line and found consensus that permanent markers are usually safe on light bulbs, but do your homework with whatever bulb and decorative substance you are thinking to use on it beforehand. We want to stay safe while we commemorate our pets.

In memory of Mimi, my one and only Border Collie.
