6 Tips To Get A Loose Dog To Come

How To Get A Loose Dog To ComeIf your dog isn’t trained to come when called, and he’s gotten away from you, the first thing is to call his name, in a high-pitched, sweet voice. Do not get angry or let your dog know you’re angry even if you are. That will send him away from you and if this happens again, he’ll remember. If he doesn’t come, here are a few things to try.

1 – Squat down to your dog’s level and call him playfully. If he comes, pet him and tell him good boy.

2 – If your dog knows a word for the fact that a treat is coming, use it. “Do you want a cookie, Rover?” Emphasize the “cookie” word. Even say “Want a cookie, cookie, coooookie, Rover?” Use an upbeat voice and head towards the door. If he follows, give him that cookie. Keep the contract you make with your dog, so he continues to trust you.

3 – If you have a crinkly bag, like potato chips, or something else the dog knows means treats, then by all means, use it now. Crinkle that bag! Add in some yum yums, even pretend your eating it, and invite your dog to join you. If you squat down to his level, this often helps. You can scatter the food on the ground near you, and gently reach out to take his collar when he eats. Then let him finish. Keep in mind that there may be a next time.

4 – Sometimes a dog will come if you lay down on the ground. You may have to add sound effects, “Rover, help! Help!” If he comes, then, gently take him by the collar and tell him what a good boy he is.

5 – If your dog likes car rides, use that as incentive. Open the door to the car, and invite him on a rewarding short car ride. “Let’s go, Rover!” Remember to take him on that car ride, even if it’s just around the block. If you don’t, this may never work again. Always keep your promise to your dog.

6 – Try calling him, laughing and running in the opposite direction. Make it look like you’re playing a game. Maybe he’ll follow you into the back yard, or look for you behind a tree. Don’t startle him when you reach for him. Talk happy talk to him when he gets closer and tell him he’s a good boy. Praise him. Keep it positive.

How to Get A Loose Dog To ComeWhatever you do, when your dog returns to you, be upbeat and reinforcing. That’s very important. Give him delicious treats, praise, pets, and all good things. If you scold him, are angry, or ignore him, he’ll remember this and won’t think that coming back to you is such a good idea if this should happen again. But you won’t want this to happen again, so contact me to work with you and training your dog to come when called in Broward county.
